水は強弱にあらず、濕乾にあらず、動靜にあらず、冷煖にあらず、有無にあらず、 迷 悟にあらざるなり。こりては金剛よりもかたし、たれかこれをやぶらん。融しては乳 水よりもやはらかなり、たれかこれをやぶらん。しかあればすなはち、現成所有の功 徳をあやしむことあたはず。しばらく十方の水を十方にして著眼看すべき時節を參學 すべし。人天の水をみるときのみの參學にあらず、水の水をみる參學あり、水の水を 修證するがゆゑに。

Water is not to be found in strong-versus-weak, in wet-versus-dry, in movement-versus-stasis, in cold-versus-hot, in is-versus-isn’t, in deluded-versus-enlightened. When it freezes, it is harder than a diamond — who could break it? When it melts, it is softer than milk — who could break it? While this is so, one should not doubt all its ability of constantly becoming what it is. Think a little: how is it that the water of the whole world can be seen at a particular moment as the water of the whole world? The aim is not tolearn how humans and celestials see water. What has to be learned is how water sees water, how water practices water and acknowledges water.

Vesi ei ole nii, nagu tugev vastandub nõrgale, märg kuivale, liikumine paigalolekule, külm kuumale, olemine mitteolemisele, kangastused selgusele. Jäätununa võib ta olla kõvem kui teemant — kes suudaks teda purustada? Sulanuna võib ta olla pehmem kui piim — kes suudaks teda purustada?
